Ding Dong! Merrily on High

Christmas Carol Lyrics

Ding dong! merrily on high,
In heav'n the bells are ringing:
Ding dong! verily the sky
Is riv'n with angel singing.
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!

E'en so here below, below,
Let steeple bells be swungen,
And "Io, io, io!"
By priest and people sungen. Refrain

Pray you, dutifully prime
Your matin chime, ye ringers;
May you beautifully rime
Your evetime song, ye singers. Refrain

About This Carol

Ding Dong! Merrily on High is a bright and jubilant carol that blends Renaissance-era melody with English lyrics full of Christmas cheer. The tune, originally titled Branle de l’Official, dates back to the 16th century and was composed by French cleric Jehan Tabourot (who wrote under the pen name Thoinot Arbeau). It was a lively dance tune before it ever became associated with Christmas.

The English lyrics were added in the early 20th century by English composer and church musician George Ratcliffe Woodward, who had a deep love for early music and a knack for reviving historic melodies with sacred or seasonal lyrics. His adaptation turned the old dance into a dazzling carol, complete with the famously high and ringing “Gloria” that makes choral versions so exhilarating.

The carol doesn’t focus on the Nativity scene or specific biblical references. Instead, it’s a joyful call to celebration, urging bells to ring and hearts to lift in song. It captures the communal and musical spirit of Christmas, especially in traditional English village life.

Whether sung by a robed choir in full harmony or joyfully belted out during caroling, Ding Dong! Merrily on High remains a sparkling example of how older musical traditions can be brought to life with modern joy.
